Well, it’s official. I’m sick of winter. Between a stomach bug, and now one doozy of a cold (perhaps flu?), our clan is wiped out. We’ve all been sick with the latest illness for nearly a week. The husband rarely gets sick, but even this one took him down. So to say I’m already dreaming of warm weather and running around outside is pretty much the understatement of the year!
But, winter is here to stay for a while, like it or not!
And since I do not have a good segue here, I guess I’ll just jump to what I really want to write about tonight. I realized it has been a while since I gave an update on Asher as far as his developmental delays and therapies. And there are actually quite a few updates to share!
I recently met with Asher’s case worker (that is probably the wrong terminology, so I sincerely apologize that this is most likely wrong – if anyone knows the correct term, please let me know!), his OT, and PT to discuss his progress.
Well, the first piece of news (and the best!) is he has officially “graduated” from physical therapy after almost a full year of services!
I have said it here before, and I’ll say it again (and probably until the end of time), but we have loved, loved, LOVED working with Asher’s PT, Brian. I almost cannot believe that a year ago Asher wasn’t crawling and could barely roll over. Now this boy RUNS everywhere! He loves running the “circle” of our house (we had a fairly traditional layout, at least for our area, where the living room, dining room, kitchen, and front hallway create a circle as you go (or in Asher’s case, run) through the rooms. It’s pretty much his favorite thing. That, and running right up to the two stair drop we have to our family room. If the baby gate isn’t up, the husband and I are constantly yelling “STOP!!” to Asher as he runs up to the stairs. I think he’s on to us though, because he basically treats it as a game (he always stops, turns around, and gives us the most mischievous grin).
So overall, we are SUPER happy with Asher’s progress in PT. Brian – if you’re out there reading this – THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Asher loves being active and we owe much of his happiness from being active to you!
The second piece of news is that he most likely will be graduating from OT in about 3 months. He has been doing exceptionally well with fine motor, but to be honest, he was never doing that poorly with his fine motor. We mainly wanted OT services, as I blogged about here, because of the feeding issues we were having.
Some of his feeding issues have improved, but he is still super picky. Of course, he’s now almost 2 (!!!), so pickiness comes with territory of two year old, but Asher unfortunately still takes it to the extreme. He still will only drink milk (no other beverages) and from only one type of sippy/straw cup (affiliate link).
We forgot his cup on Christmas when we went to a family member’s house and it was quite the debacle. We purchased a different type of straw cup from Walgreens and it was a no-go. Same for the 3 other cups we borrowed from family. We ended up having to go to our at-home daycare’s house to pick up the cup she uses. Fun times. #sarcasm
The last piece of news is we decided to go ahead with a speech therapy evaluation. The eval is scheduled for next week and I’m not sure how it will go. With both PT and OT, I was almost 100% certain he would qualify for services. But with speech, I’m on the fence. He definitely has a delay – he doesn’t say as much as an almost-2 year old should, and what he does say is pretty garbled. However, he does say a lot more than he used to, and he seems to have finally reached that stage where his language is “exploding.” It seems like every day he learns new words.
It’s been fantastic to be able to communicate more with him. It broke my heart to see him frustrated when he was clearly trying to tell us something.
I’ll be sure to give another update after the eval!
Well, time for bed for me. Maybe tomorrow will be the day this horrific cough and cold will leave this house! 😉
Only 67 days until Spring!
