Just a week or so ago I opened my email on a Saturday morning to a wonderful surprise – a chance to review a picture book! It pretty much made my whole day! I’m probably a broken record at this point, but I truly LOVE a good picture book!
And I’m not alone – Brynn practically hit the ceiling when I told her we had a new book to check out. It makes my heart so happy that this kid loves books as much as I do! 🙂
Okay, I’ll stop gushing about my excitement and get right to it. 😉
The super sweet Tonya Calvert gave me the fantastic opportunity to check out her absolutely gorgeous new book, Saylor on the Seashore. Saylor that tells the tale of a young seagull who lives by the seashore with Momma and Poppa Seagull. Saylor also visits his friend, Old Gray Pelican, who tells him stories of other animals who live by the seashore; Gray Pelican uses these stories to warn Saylor to be cautious and and careful of the fisherman who frequent the shore.
I love so many things about this book, I barely know where to begin. To start, the illustrations by the immensely talented Alejandro Echavez, are just gorgeous. The characters are absolutely adorable, – Brynn just loved them! I especially loved the scenic pictures of the beach. It’s been especially chilly and rainy here, so this book completely transported me to the warmth and sunshine of the Panhandle in the Deep South.
The story itself was so endearing, but also taught an important lesson. Saylor is friends with an older bird, but does he heed the warnings he gives? Brynn and I talked about the story after we read it about how it’s important to listen to grown ups. But the story also showed how friends can help each other, when we need it, and that everyone can help in their own way.
Overall, this is a story that be read again and again. I cam already tell this is a story that will grow with our family and be loved for years to come.
Many, many thanks to Tonya for this amazing opportunity to preview this truly special book. Brynn and I loved every page – cover to cover!
I highly recommend this to anyone with kids, or who has a special child in their life!
*I was allowed advance access to this book by the author herself, but this review is absolutely, 100% my own!*
