Some months back I had the amazing opportunity to read a new children’s picture book by Maria Ashworth. The book, Iggy Loo, has become a treasured favorite by both Brynn and myself, so when Maria reached out to me to review her latest book, I jumped at the chance!
Her newest picture book is the first in a new series and is called Tommy James: The Littlest Cowboy in Reckon. It tells the story of Tommy James, as I’m such you could guess, is a little cowboy in the town of Reckon. 😉
Brynn has been ALL ABOUT girly things lately – princesses, unicorns, and basically anything pink and purple. So I was curious how she would react to this new book I rotated into our nightly bedtime routine.
Well, I think it’s safe to say we officially have another book to add to Brynn’s “favorites” bookshelf! She and I were both completely engrossed with the story as it unfolded. Maybe it’s because I’m a librarian and the daughter of a children’s librarian (actually TWO librarians, since my dad was a librarian too!), but I really love when children’s books (well, really any book) take the time for proper character development. This definitely checked that box for me!
The story opens with Tommy James and a little bit about the little cowboy, then moves into his encounter with Bo Jones. Spoiler alert: Bo isn’t as nice as little Tommy James is!
I love the lessons that were taught in this story, which I think would work really well in the classroom too. The book covers various topics, including the importance of not giving up, trying your best, and that everyone has something they are good at. I thought it was great to use as opportunity to talk with Brynn about problem solving and how to deal with a bully too. Overall, I can’t recommend this book enough. It is absolutely deserving of a space on every and any boy or girl’s bookshelf!
PLUS two exciting bonuses with this book! A cute song is featured in the book, and at the end of the story, the music and lyrics of the song are included! Also, as I mentioned at the beginning of this post, this is the first book in a series! So stay tuned to hear more about Maria’s webpage for books #2 and #3 in the series!
Tommy James is out and available now on Amazon (in both hardcover and soft cover!), and there is still time to get a copy for any Easter baskets you might be shopping for this week! 😉
A huge thanks to Maria for once again allowing me to preview yet another fun and truly charming book! (Brynn says thank you, too! She was so excited that we were reading a new book from “Miss Maria!”) 🙂
*I was allowed advance access to this book by the author herself, but this review is absolutely, 100% my own!*
